BLACK BEAR KODIAK GRIZZLY GRIZZLY SITKA BLACKTAIL DEER MOUNTAIN GOAT DALL SHEEP

Kodiak Island's Sitka Black tail deer population is back on the climb. After a severe winter die off in 1998 the deer numbers are beginning to explode onceJosh Jefferson big 8 point more! Black River Hunting Camps has scouted a new area for deer hunts for the past two falls with great success. The beauty of this bay and the populations of deer have encouraged BRHC to set up a November/December fall deer camp on the majestic shores of eastern Kodiak Island, Alaska.

Jake Jefferson's Kodiak black-tailed deerThis wall tent camp will be accompanied by heated six man tents, and home-style meals which will round off an inviting atmosphere. Hunting these grass lands and mountain sides is mostly a glassing man’s game. Spotting these colorful Kodiak Island deer on the move is the best way to intercept them. The deer rut typically begins in early to mid November and deer activity remains at its peak until mid December. This hunt has an extremely high success rate on the allowed 2 deer that hunters may harvest. Your typical deer rifle will be fine for the deer on Kodiak Island. Your guide will also carry a large caliber rifle for bear protection and as a precaution. Rifle in the .24 to .45 caliber are well suited for the game. Hunters the past two seasons have typically seen up to 2 dozen bucks on their five day hunts.Kyle Treptow's '05 buck

Josh's non-typical handgunPhysical conditioning will only make your hunt more enjoyable, so be prepared for 1-3 miles of walking and climbing with a small daypack. Weather conditions can be winter-like, with snow fall and freezing temperatures. Clients should dress in layers to prepare for the elements. Kodiak Island blacktail deer hunts are booked for six days of hunting and available in November and December.

"My hunt with Jake was the hunt I dreamed it would be, I saw so many sights that before I only saw on television. I have been hunting Pa white tails for 45 plus years and have harvested quite a few but none that are better than the black tail I took on Kodiak. The area supplied daily sightings of deer and bear. The extras sightings of eagles, sea lions, seals, otters, and foxes were a delight. Jake's ability to place me in the right spot and point out game was truly outstanding. His skills and personality made this my "trip of a lifetime". I would recommend it to anyone who seeks that hunt they only have dreamed of. Because of Jake my wall hanger will remind me of the great time I had on Kodiak". -Bill Markley
